Find Lansing Jail Roster Records

The Lansing jail roster is unique because the city spans two counties. Lansing is the state capital of Michigan with around 110,000 residents. Most of the city sits in Ingham County, but a part extends into Eaton County. Where someone gets arrested in Lansing determines which county jail they go to. People arrested on the Ingham County side go to the Ingham County Jail in Mason, while those picked up in the Eaton County portion go to the Eaton County Jail. This page covers both systems and shows you how to search for Lansing jail roster records in either county.

Two Counties Handle Lansing Jail Roster

Lansing straddles the Ingham and Eaton County line. This split means the Lansing jail roster is actually spread across two separate county jail systems. The Lansing Police Department makes the arrest, but the county where the arrest took place determines which jail holds the inmate.

Most Lansing arrests happen on the Ingham County side. These inmates go to the Ingham County Jail at 630 North Cedar Street in Mason. The phone number is 517-676-2431. The Ingham County Sheriff maintains the jail roster for this facility. For arrests in the western part of Lansing that falls in Eaton County, inmates go to the Eaton County Jail. Contact the Eaton County Sheriff for those bookings.

Under MCL 800.7, each county sheriff has charge and custody of their jail. MCL 800.13 requires both sheriffs to keep records of every person committed, including the inmate's name, date, and the authority behind the commitment. If you are not sure which county a Lansing arrest falls under, you may need to check both systems. Visit the Ingham County jail roster page or the Eaton County jail roster page for more on each county.

How to Search Lansing Jail Roster

Because Lansing crosses two counties, you may need to check two jail systems. Start with the Ingham County Sheriff since most of Lansing sits in that county. Call 517-676-2431 to ask about an inmate at the Ingham County Jail. If the arrest happened in the Eaton County part of Lansing, contact the Eaton County Sheriff's Office.

You can also use VINELink to search both counties. VINELink is free and lets you check custody status at jails across Michigan. Select Ingham County or Eaton County as the facility and search by name. The system confirms if someone is in custody and lets you sign up for alerts when their status changes. This is a good option when you are not sure which county jail holds the person.

For state-level searches, OTIS tracks offenders in state prison or on parole. It does not include county jail inmates. Michigan ICHAT provides criminal history checks for $10 and covers arrests and convictions from all Michigan agencies. Court records from Lansing cases are available through MiCourt.

Note: If you can't locate someone in either county system, call LPD at 517-483-4600 as the person may still be in the city's temporary holding area.

Lansing Jail Records and FOIA

Jail roster records from Lansing arrests are public under Michigan's Freedom of Information Act. MCL 15.231 gives the public access to government records, including booking logs and arrest reports. Since Lansing crosses two counties, you may need to send FOIA requests to different agencies depending on what you need.

For police reports and arrest records, file your FOIA request with the Lansing Police Department. For jail booking records, contact either the Ingham County Sheriff or the Eaton County Sheriff depending on which jail held the inmate. Under MCL 15.233, all requests must be in writing. The agency responds within five business days. Fees are limited to actual costs per MCL 15.234, and the first $20 of labor is free. Booking photos are public records in Michigan, so you can request mugshots for anyone in the Lansing jail roster.

Lansing District Court Cases

The 54A District Court handles arraignments and misdemeanor cases from Lansing. It is at 124 West Michigan Avenue, just steps from the police department. The phone number is (517) 483-6400. After a Lansing arrest, the person is arraigned at this court where a judge sets bond and determines next steps.

Search Lansing court cases through MiCourt. The system shows case numbers, charges, hearing dates, and case status. Felony cases from Lansing may be bound over to Ingham County Circuit Court or Eaton County Circuit Court depending on the arrest location. Court records help fill in details beyond what the jail roster shows about a Lansing arrest.
