Search Westland Jail Roster
Westland jail roster records are part of the Wayne County jail system. Westland is a city of about 85,000 people in western Wayne County. The Westland Police Department handles arrests within the city, but there is no city jail. All arrestees get transferred to the Wayne County Jail in downtown Detroit. If you need to find someone arrested in Westland, search the Wayne County inmate lookup through Sheriff Connect. That system shows current inmates, charges, and booking information for everyone held at the Wayne County facilities. Chief Jeff Jedrusik leads the Westland police force, and any arrest his officers make feeds into the county roster.
Westland Overview
Wayne County Jail Holds Westland Arrestees
Westland does not run a jail. The city has a police lockup for temporary holding, but it is not a long-term facility. After arrest, Westland police transport inmates to the Wayne County Jail. Wayne County is the largest county in Michigan, and its jail system is the biggest in the state. The sheriff is responsible for the jail under MCL 800.7, and MCL 800.13 requires that every booking be recorded with the person's name, date, and reason for commitment.
The Wayne County Jail is in Detroit, roughly 20 miles east of Westland. Transport can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic and time of day. Once at the county jail, the person gets booked and appears on the Wayne County roster. For more about the county jail system, see the Wayne County jail roster page.

Westland Jail Roster FOIA Requests
Under Michigan's Freedom of Information Act, jail records are public. MCL 15.231 makes clear that government records are open to the public. You can file a FOIA request with the Westland Police Department for arrest reports or with the Wayne County Sheriff for jail booking records. MCL 15.233 requires you to describe the records you want in writing. The agency has five business days to respond, with a possible ten-day extension for large requests.
Fees follow the rules in MCL 15.234. The first $20 of search time is free. After that, labor and copy costs apply. Booking photos are public records in Michigan, as confirmed by the Patterson v. Allegan County Sheriff ruling. You cannot be denied a mugshot under the privacy exemption. If you just need to know if someone is currently in jail, the online search tools are faster and free.
Note: Some records tied to open cases may be partially withheld under MCL 15.243.
Westland Court and State Records
Cases from Westland go to the 18th District Court for misdemeanors and arraignments. Felonies move to Wayne County Circuit Court. You can look up case information at MiCOURT, which covers courts across Michigan. It shows hearing dates, charges, case status, and dispositions.
For statewide criminal history, the ICHAT tool costs $10 per search and pulls records from all Michigan law enforcement agencies. The Michigan Sex Offender Registry is free and lets you search for registered offenders near Westland by name or address. If someone went from the Wayne County jail to state prison, OTIS will track them for up to three years after discharge.
